The Summit is being organized by the International Institute for Peace through Tourism (IIPT) in collaboration with the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC). Aim of the Summit is to continue "Building a Culture of Peace through Tourism" and to mobilize the world's largest industry, travel and tourism, as a leading force for poverty reduction.

Preparatory Roundtables have now been scheduled for Geneva, September 25 and 27, and Washington October 15. The Roundtables will provide significant input to the outcomes of the Summit. Representatives of international organizations interested in participating in one of the workshops in either Geneva or Washington are invited to contact the IIPT. Geneva Summit to be Featured at World Travel Market

Second Global Summit on Peace through Tourism will be featured in a Center-stage ceremony on Opening Day, November 11th at World Travel Market, the premier global event for the travel and tourism industry. Now in its 23rd year, the four-day event will bring together some 5,000 travel and tourism companies from more than 172 countries. This year, the exhibition will be held for the first time at ExCeL - the purpose built exhibition and conference center located in the heart of London's historical Docklands.Speakers in the center-stage ceremony will include Jean-Claude Baumgarten, President, World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC); H.E. Akel Biltaji, Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA); Louis D'Amore, Founder and President, International Institute for Peace through Tourism (IIPT); and host Tom Nutley, Managing Director, Reed Travel Exhibitions.

Tom Nutley captured the spirit of World Travel Market, the IIPT, and indeed the travel and tourism industry in his opening paragraphs of his Foreword to the "Official Catalogue" of WTM 2001: "Bringing people together from around the world of every creed and colour to conduct business and make what are often lifelong friendships, has always been one of the heart warming bi-products of World Travel Market. For many years now, I have watched and delighted in the greetings and sincere welcomes you see in every aisle, and around every corner of the event; people from totally different backgrounds, cultures and regions who grasp hands together and, before getting down to business, talk about their families, their children, how they have been, and what's new" IIPT is honored and grateful for the wholehearted support of Tom Nutley and Reed Travel Exhibitions. Bermuda to Sponsor Geneva Summit Luncheon IIPT is proud and honored to announce that the Bermuda Ministry of Tourism will sponsor a luncheon at the Second Global Summit on Peace through Tourism. The luncheon, featuring the African Diaspora Heritage Trail (ADHT) will be hosted by Hon. David H. Allen, Bermuda Minister of Tourism. The Concept of an African Diaspora Heritage Trail was seeded at the First Global Summit on Peace through Tourism in Amman, Jordan, November 2000. By the spring of 2001, The African Diaspora Heritage Trail was launched as a self-guided tour in Bermuda. The following month, at the Africa Travel Association Conference, Cape Town, South Africa, the "Trail" was endorsed by both the ATA and IIPT as a global cross border initiative.

The aim of the African Diaspora Heritage Trail is to "identify, conserve and promote historic sites linked with the development and progress of people of African descent." Implementation of the Trail as an international initiative gained significant momentum with the outstanding success of the First African Diaspora Heritage Trail Conference in Bermuda this past May. "The transatlantic slave trade transported more than four million Africans to North America and the Caribbean over a span of nearly four centuries. As such, the African Diaspora left an indelible mark behind that links nations together with a common historical and cultural bond. It (is time) that we explore these bonds and create a trail that examines our shared history." Hon. David H. Allen, Bermuda Minister of Tourism

Mountain Climbers for Peace IIPT was honored to join with the Himalayan Club, Green Globe, Pacific Asia Travel Association and SKAL International in endorsing the members of the IUCN-UIAA Summit Team in their climb together in Switzerland between 24 and 29 August 2002. The purpose of the climb was to recognize the success of the Swiss Government in achieving UNESCO World Heritage status for the Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn region and to promote transboundary co-operation for sustainable development and peace. The climb was particularly noteworthy as the Team was comprised of mountaineers from India and Pakistan and a quadruple amputee from Scotland. Notable firsts of the climbing team included climbs of the via ferrata on the Tour d'Ai (2330m), Les Diablerets (3209m), and the Monch (4099m). A full record of activities is available from www.iucn.org and www.uiaa.ch.

The Summit Team stressed the value of international links and exchanges in sport, culture and tourism as effective vehicles for promoting peace, cooperation and understanding among people of different backgrounds. The Team also hopes that sports organizations in India and Pakistan will make new efforts to share and enjoy the common sporting and cultural interests of the two nations that would lead to co-operation and understanding. IIPT is currently exploring ways to sustain this noble initiative in promoting understanding between India and Pakistan through Tourism, Culture and Sport at the Second Global Summit in Geneva and is hopeful that one or more members of the climbing team will be able to join us at the Summit.
